In 2009 a group of chemists from the University of Oregon who studied the Magnetic properties of manganese oxide , for use in electronic components, discovered by accident a new color. It has recently been released for use in both industry and plastic arts and could be considered as a genuine case of serendipity.
A new color discovered accidentally!
"Magnetic properties and electronic structure of blue pigments based on manganese", this is the title of the article published in the journal of the American Chemical Society, which describes an investigation carried out in 2009 and which resulted in the discovery of a new color: a manganese oxide pigment with an almost perfect shade of blue .
The study s I do it at Oregon State University (OSU), but researchers from Florida State University, and Roosevelt University, Chicago also participated, and the goal was to evaluate and experiment with different materials to be used in the field of electronics.Along this way they mixed manganese oxide with other chemical substances and subjected this mixture to temperatures above 1,000 degrees (1,093 degrees Celsius, specifically), thus obtaining a structure of a color bright blue .

Serendipity, the accidental discovery of something other than what is being sought, occurred as follows, in the words of Professor Mas Subramanian, of the Department of Chemistry of the OSU:
«One day, a graduate student who was working I'm on the project, he took samples of a very hot oven and came across a sample that was blue, a very beautiful blue.I realized immediately that something incredible had happened ».
Unlike other pigments, such as Prussian blue or cobalt blue, manganese oxide is more resistant and stable in high temperatures, does not emit cyanide and is not carcinogenic. Its reflective properties also make it perfect for covering surfaces exposed to the sun, as it would keep the interior spaces cooler with less energy consumption.

For the commercialization of this new color the University of Oregon signed a deal with a paint factory ( The Shepherd Color Company ), which will put this product on the market for both industrial and artistic use, given its popularity among some plastic artists who have had access to pigment and have praised the vividness of color and its resistance.
Sin du da, human beings are deeply visual, so this new color, this new shade of blue, will be for the enjoyment and enjoyment of our eyes. And by the way, we recommend the articles: Do you know how you see the colors? and do women see more colors than men?
