2017 will be a year of challenges for astronomy, and in particular for the study of our solar system and the galaxy it is in.With some luck it could be the year that we managed to have the first photograph of a black hole Thanks to an international project, the Event Horizon Telescope .
A black hole will be photographed in 2017
We will tell you a story that could reach a climax in 2017, but which began in 1971, when Martin Rees and Donald Lynden-Bell proposed the hypothesis that in the center of the Milky Way , our galaxy, there should be a supermassive black hole, which they named as Sagittarius A * , to differentiate it from the rest of the central sector, known as Sagittarius A, and to indicate that something very special was happening there.
Supermassive black holes are usually found in the center of galaxies and there is still no cons among astrophysicists about how they originate, but they could play a fundamental role in the stability of elliptical and spiral galaxies, such as the Milky Way.
In 1974 the astronomers Bruce Balick and Robert Brown , using an interferometer-an optical instrument that interferes with the light wave, which in astronomy has been used to measure star diameters and detect planets outside the solar system-, confirmed the existence of Sagittarius A *.This phenomenon Stellar would have a mass equivalent to that of 4 million soles like ours, and a diameter of 45 AU, just a little smaller than the space occupied by our entire solar system (50).Remember that a UA, Astronomical Unit, is equivalent to the average distance between the Earth and the Sun (149,597,870.7 km).
In 2013, during a conference International astrophysics at the Steward Observatory of the University of Arizona (United States), the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project was launched, which would consist of taking a “photograph ”Of the supermassive black hole in the center of our galaxy.
The quotes come to the case because, first, it is not a telescope, but a network of observatories in everyone , who will focus their interferometers to build an image, the “photograph”, of Sagittarius A *.All Earth would act as a single telescope focused towards the center of our galaxy.
Naturally, the black hole is not photographed, it is not possible, but its outline, the visible edge, known as horizon d e events or event horizon , hence the name of the project.
When the EHT was created it was thought that the image would culminate in years, that is, in 2018, but it is possible that I managed to complete this year, and new data on these mysterious and fascinating accidents of our universe begin to emerge.
We are getting closer to unexpected things. If you are interested in this article, do not stop reading what Hawking Think about looking for alien life and about these holes.
