When talking about causes or factors that affect the longevity or quality of life of the world population, poverty and inequality are rarely mentioned, aspects that cannot be ignored among the most important obstacles for human beings can realize their full potential, but this could be changing.
Poverty and inequality shorten life?
A gigantic study in which 1.7 million people were evaluated and more than 30 researchers from universities such as Columbia, Harvard, King's College and Imperial College, both of London, confirmed something that seems obvious, but it is not, and that poverty and inequality are a factor as harmful to health and life expectancy as obesity, alcohol and hypertension.
The study, published in The Lancet , notes:
«the low socioeconomic level is one of the strongest indicators of morbidity and morbidity premature health worldwide. However, global health strategies do not consider poor socio-economic circumstances as modifiable risk factors ».
When analyzing the socio-economic data of almost two million people , they found that poverty conditions can shorten life expectancy by 2.1 years , in adults between 40 and 85 years old; a very large reduction compared to that produced with high alcohol consumption (6 months) , obesity (8 months) or hypertension (1.6 years) ; and just less than the reduction caused by sedentary lifestyle (2.4 years), diabetes (3.9 years) and smoking (4.8 years) .

This comparison It is not capricious, these are factors that affect health and that the World Health Organization has been officially fighting for several years. However, despite the existence of previous studies confirming these observations, this international organization has refused to include the poverty and inequality as important factors that shorten life and harm health, and therefore should be part of the health policies of all countries, and of international organizations.
This study does not contradict other information on longevity in rural communities of Japan, the Mediterranean or South America that, although humble, enjoy good conditions environmental and nutritional information.Valuable information, but to some extent irrelevant when contrasted with the masses of human beings living in socioeconomic conditions of poverty and inequality.

But this does not prevent when addressing the issue of poverty, whether it is managed as a political or ideological problem, and not of health.
The Spanish epidemiologist at the University of Alcala de Henares, Manuel Franco, who was not involved in this study, affirmed: " The evidence says that inequality kills. Are we interested in the health of the country, both that of the poor and that of the rich? This factor is not attacked because it does not interest ».
The study was sponsored by the European Commission, the Secretary of Education and the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Medical Research Council, NordForsk and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, and its objective is to change the position of important organizations such as WHO around world poverty and inequality.

Silvia Stringhini, of the University Hospital of Lausanne and coordinator of this study, declared: «Socio-economic adversity should be included as a modifiable risk factor in local and global health strategies, policies and health risk monitoring».
Maybe soon we begin to see warnings at the borders and airports pointing out that it has been determined that poverty and misery can be bad for health, so it is recommended to look for prosperity and personal development.Fantastic that it will be possible to focus the proper attention on these problems.
