In line with this, the journal "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" (PNAS) published a article by some researchers of the University of Georgia in the United States, who have discovered that silencing a specific gene could incredibly determine someone's ability to create healthy relationships and develop empathy.
This gene is called OXT, and is part of the sequence of genetic material that collaborates by producing oxytocin, a hormone dubbed "the love hormone", which is crucial in the carino and in the creation of relationships Affective in mammals.
To understand the study a little more, it is important that you know that through a natural process called methylation, our body regulates genes, causing chemical transformation of DNA that results in activation or specific gene deactivation s, with the aim of regulating the extent to which the genetic material is active at all times.
The research team collected saliva samples from 120 volunteers , in order to perform analysis genetic and calculate the levels of methylation of the OXT gene.Next, the participants were underwent various tests , in which their social skills and the mechanism of their brain were evaluated at that time.

As a result, the team discovered that the people with the highest index of methylation of the OXT gene, were who had the most inactive gene, and therefore both used to be less skilled when it came to recognizing facial expressions .Apart from that, during the tests they showed more anxiety when they had to describe the relationships they had with their closest people and talk about them.
In addition to evaluating some of their social abilities, the team used magnetic resonances to measure brain activity, by means of the flow of oxygenated blood in different areas of the brain, thus they found that the participants with the most methylated OXT gene , had a lower brain activity in those regions associated with social processes .Finally, these participants also showed a smaller amount of gray matter in the region cerebral fusiform gyrus , which apparently plays an important role in cognitive and social processes.
Although they admit that the study is at its dawn, they hope to move forward, involving other research and possible treatments for different social disorders. At the moment, methylation is a dynamic process, so it can change throughout life, but do not rule out the possibility of altering these levels through medication, to help those people who suffer from abnormalities in the processes of social cognition.
