The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found that for the average person:
- There is a 47% chance that one of its secrets involves breaches of trust , understanding these as: not returning borrowed money, misappropriation of assets that had left you...
-There is a 60% more chances that a secret whose root is in a lie or a financial inaccuracy.
-There is a 33% chances that this secret involves a robbery, a hidden relationship or is related to discontent at work.
Next, the team asked the participants how often They thought about those secrets in the last month, and how often they found themselves in situations that forced them to hide their secret. The results showed that the secrets were much more likely to come to the fore when people were alone with their thoughts than in social situations, which means we spent more mental energy circling our secrets, trying to hide them.

In this study, it was discovered, among many other things, how exhausting it can be for a person to keep secrets, to the point that when you think about your secret your physical reaction is similar to having a literal weight, that is, physical over it.
According to Slepian, who led the investigation, no matter how guilty we feel the secret or how serious this is, what makes it really difficult to carry with it is the extent to which we are forced to hide it from our or environment: friends, family...
As you can see, we all lie from time to time, but the truth is that keeping some secret (or several) can be exhausting, whatever they are.? Tell us what you think!
