China is the home of the longest insect in the world

It is a new species of stick insect of the genus Phryganistria that measures more than half a meter .The media in China covered the discovery of the specimen, which was made during a field trip in the Guangxi Zhuang region in 2014, but has now been declared the longest in the world.

The 62.4 centimeter long creature s operates on the previous record , another stick insect discovered in 2008 (and called Phobaeticus chani or Chan's megastick) for almost six centimeters.

The specimen was discovered by Zhao Li of the West China Insect Museum.Zhao dij or that had been hunting the animal for years , after hearing reports from farmers in the region of a "huge insect" like an index finger of a thick adult.

Zhao Li said he had hoped to find the insect since 1998 in a field inspection in Guangxi, when residents told him that they had run into a certain "giant insect." Zhao assumed a giant stick insect could exist, but I can't see one until two years ago.

According to Zhao, he was collecting insects on a 1,200-meter high mountain in the city of Liuzhou, in Guangxi , when a Dark shadow appeared in the distance, which looked like a tree twig. When the scientist approached the shadow, he was surprised to discover that the huge insect's legs were as long as his body.

Zhao has named the insect Phryganistria chinensis Zhao in honor of himself, but it seems that it won't be long until that a new owner claim the record from the specimen's hands found by him. After taking the insect back to the IMWC, Zhao said he laid six eggs, even with the smallest of the calf measuring 26 centimeters in length.

Phryganistria is a genus of stick insects that belong to the giant stick family. It was first described by the Swedish entomologist Carl Stål in 1875.The members of the genus are found only in the Southeast Asia.
