The last prediction of Albert Einstein, made within the framework of the theory of relativity just a hundred years ago , has just been confirmed thanks to a detection made by LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory ) In Science Daily Online we want to share with you some extraordinary information about this discovery.
Gravitational waves: once again, Einstein was REASON
In 1916 Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves , and made a small mistake: I believe that these could never be detected by humans, due to the time and the immense space that would separate us from them.In the 80's a group of physicists and astronomers set out to contradict this statement and at the same time demonstrate Einstein's latest prediction; for this they designed an experiment that would involve the construction of a special observatory (LIGO), and the participation of more than a thousand scientists from fifteen countries.

The creators and promoters of the experiment were the scientists Kip Thorne and Ronald Drever , of Caltech, and Rainer Weiss , of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and it consisted of creating models and simulations of situations in the universe that could generate gravitational waves and determine which indicators could serve to prove its existence.The other step was the design and creation of LIGO, an observatory made up of two detectors located in the United States at a distance of 3,000 kilometers, and considered today as the optical instrument of largest and most accurate precision in the world (can detect infinitesimal anomalies, equivalent to one tenth of a nucleus of an atom).

LIGO came into operation in 2015 and on September 14 both detectors captured a signal that when compared to simulations could identify as the record of the passage of gravitational waves produced by the collision of two large black holes at 1.3 billion light years away.
According to the famous English physicist Stephen Hawking, it would be "a new form of look at the universe, ”which, in addition to checking Einstein's prediction, puts us in the presence of the first direct observation of the fusion of two black holes .
Einstein predicted that events of great magnitude, like the fusion of black holes, could make part of the matter become energy and travel ea through the universe in the form of gravitational waves, causing anomalies in space and time.
It is estimated that the fusion of these super black holes involved masses 36 times greater than our sun and part of that mass, equivalent to three suns, it became energy in fractions of a second, as described by Einstein's famous formula: E=mc2 , that is, energy is equal to mass times the velocity of the light squared.
The physics Alicia Sintes , of the University of the Balearic Islands and coordinator of the Spanish team that participated in this project, highlighted:
"It is a historical discovery, which opens a new era in the understanding of the cosmos."
