Pure suspense, "With death on the heels"
One of the most intense and suspenseful scenes of American cinema is one in which Cary Grant is chased by a fumigation plane, in the movie "With death on the heels" very representative work of this genre.

For a period of time, the viewer is overwhelmed by the action and feels identified with the anxiety of the protagonist, who tries to hide among the trees.But...
What happens in the brain of the viewer during this time?
In an experiment involving 19 volunteers, led by Matt Bezdek together with a team belonging to the Georgia Institute of Technology, the activity of the participants was analyzed while watching movies of Thriller cult, like “Alien”.

During the experiment, the scene that the volunteers saw fit into a plane that activated the neurons responsible for peripheral vision. They tried to analyze that occurred in the different neuronal areas that are dedicated to attention, visual while the tension grew strongly in the film.
The results of the experiment were published in the journal Neuroscience and demonstrate that when the suspense grows, the neuronal activity in the calcarin area a is minimized to the extreme, while that increases in the central area of the processing of the visio n.During the scene of Cary Gran in “With Death on the heels ”, the vision of the volunteers focused, especially on the focus of danger, the protagonist, and returned to normal when the stress was reduced.

Other previous experiments had studied this “tunnel effect” of attention, although this is when you first see the differences in brain activity.
