A while ago, in Science Daily Online we dedicated an article to optical illusions. In which we mention the effect «troxler» , an interesting optical illusion that can have repercussions on our Daily life .It was discovered in the 19th century by Ignaz Paul Vital Troxler, a Swiss doctor and politician.Let's play with our eyesight!
What is the troxler effect?
Our view deceives us.If we stare at a point for a period of time of approximately 20 seconds , our peripheral vision will start to make its own and, mainly, what is left on the periphery will disappear .This is known as troxler effect .
If there are no large color contrasts enter e the point where we look and the environment, the effect is greater and the the further you go what you are looking at, the more it will increase the Optical illusion.
How does it occur?
Our brain is "blind", it needs our eyes to be in continuous motion to be stimulate the neurons and we can capture everything what is in our environment. The visual information that our retinas capture reaches our eyes and our brain because there is a movement .If we somehow manage to block the movement , staring at a point for example, the troxler effect occurs.A part of the visual information is lost .It also happens that, when information is lost, the brain fills the gaps with the closest color.
In our daily lives we have two clear examples of the troxler effect. The first is the magic tricks .The magicians use the defects of our visual perception to strain their tricks and one of them is the troxler effect. The second, and more dangerous, is a consequence of alcohol consumption .Intoxicated people suffer from the so-called tunnel effect , which is nothing but "troxler", no longer perceive what is in the periphery and sometimes even what's in front .Very dangerous, especially if you drive.
Let's play with our sight!
Look at black point 20 seconds and the blue lines will disappear . This is great! As always, look at the black cross in the center for about 20 seconds and you will first see turn a bluish green point and then the lilac dots will disappear.
3.In this case you will see the blue circle disappear.
4.In this, look at the green dot and the yellow dots will disappear!
5.In the latter, the Cheshire cat will disappear! Only his smile will remain !
