Recent research has shown that avocado plays a vital role in the fight against leukemia , the most common type of cancer that affects children and adolescents.
This research revealed that avocado-derived molecules are very effective in combating stem cells of leukemia, who are responsible for most of the patient relapses.
A promising study
This novel study led by Professor Pablo Spagnuolo of the University of Waterloo, Canada, I identify a compound in avocado called avocatin B .This substance specifically targets cancer stem cells, who are the ones that feed this disease and are responsible for relapses of patients.
Pablo Spagnuolo explains:
«The cancer stem cell is really the one boosts the disease and is largely the reason why many patients suffer a relapse »
Different tests were performed to determine how this compound works at the molecular level and it was demonstrated that it is directed and destroys the carcinogenic stem cells without affecting healthy cells. In this sense, Spagnuolo states:
«It is an exciting moment ; Avocatin B not only eliminates the origin of AML, but having a selective effect makes it less toxic »
Years of research and testing are missing
Although there are still many years to be able to use this discovery in affected patients , experiments are underway to begin clinical trials, which is very promising in the fight against this disease.
Research on this compound , avocatin B , was published in the Cancer Research and the authors have already submitted a request for the use of This substance highlights that although avocatin B seems to be very efficient in the fight against leukemia, specifically the so-called acute myeloid , Spagnuolo believes that it can have many more benefits and applications in addition to the oncological part.
This may be one of the most important discoveries of recent years to address one of the strongest and most common diseases among children and adolescents.Beyond this interesting and promising study, it is no more to incorporate avocado into our diet. In addition to being delicious, it is rich in monounsaturated fats, antioxidants and minerals that are very beneficial for our health.
