Plastic and aesthetic surgery operations are not a modern fashion , nor can we think of them as the "existential whim" of those who wish to be taller, who do not feel happy with his slanted eyes and wishes to have them more oval.
Plastic surgery also fulfills a reconstructive purpose , either in the wake of a traumatic accident or to correct that possible "defect" with which we came to the world, and that a simple operation can correct if we wish. However, have you ever wondered when the first operations of this type were performed?
Today in Science Daily Online we want to give you three amazing examples of overcoming and how medicine gave good results in really dramatic moments. Are you ready to discover three testimonies?
The first and impressive operations of plastic surgery
1.Sailor Walter Yeo
We are in the First World War.Our protagonist is Walter Yeo , a British sailor who is considered, to be the first patient who underwent a reconstructive facial surgery. But what happened to this young boy? During a confrontation in 1916 aboard the HMS Warspite, he was hit by a bomb, losing part of his face, including his eyelids.
However, it was not until 1917 when Walter was intervened by Sir Harold Gillies , the first doctor who used skin grafts for the reconstruction of the face. And the result was the one you can see in the images, his eyes were reconstructed and a mask was applied to give a more balanced image of his face.
2.The amazing nose of Mr.William M.Spreckley
No, no matter how much surprise you we will tell you that the young William M.Spreckley was not born with that nose you see in the first images. We are once again in the First World War, there where this man effectively served as a lieutenant in a British contingent, in battalion 16a.He received a brutal shot and that was the result, the progressive deformation of his nose, an inflammation and the subsequent deformity.
It was again Dr. Sir Harold Gillies , who worked the miracle.Lieutenant Spreckley intervened in 1917, and 1920 was discharged. In the images you can see how our mature patient with normal years, reaching old age with a balanced appearance.and with a completely normal nose.A complete wonder!
3.The complex reconstruction of Willie Vicarage
The case of Willie Vicarage is more shocking. In 1916, and during the battle of Jutland, this boy had a strong impact on his face, and especially in his mouth: he was destroyed. This reconstruction is described as one of the most complex and delicate because they still did not have antibiotics , with which, the infections were almost constant and, of course, fatal.
The issue of skin grafting was very complicated given the constant infections, hence with this patient had to develop a complex drainage system to prevent this problem from appearing. It was a system based on tubes that you can see in the images, where the grafted skin tissues were fed and nourished, something that was very effective in the case from Willi Vicarage. His mouth and teeth were effectively rebuilt. Many soldiers were able to return to lead a normal life thanks to these wonderful advances in plastic surgery.
Amazing, right?
