What would humanity do if an asteroid were to impact Earth?

In February 2013 an asteroid of 19 meters in diameter flew over the skies of Russia and did not hit the Earth exactly, but if it exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk, the shock wave of the explosion in the air caused the Most windows and stained glass will explode causing more than 1,500 wounded.

This event, fortunately without fatalities, served to remind the world that the Earth is continually white from small and medium-sized asteroids, and that in any moment could be reached by a devastating one, like the one that hit Siberia at the beginning of the 20th century, or apocalyptic, like the one that ended the dinosaurs and caused the last great extinction of species 65 million years ago.h2> What would humanity do if an asteroid were to impact the earth?

Although most astronomers do not believe that we are in danger of being impacted in the next 50 years by an asteroid similar to the one that I finish with the dinosaurs (9.5 km in diameter), they do not completely rule out the possibility of an unpleasant surprise. In 2004 a 274 meter wide asteroid was detected, Apophis , in progress towards the Earth and a possible impact was estimated in 2029, but later calculations indicated that it would pass more than 80,000 kilometers, which is not much distance in astronomical terms.

For several years the European Space Agency has been carrying out monitoring and evaluation through an office of observation of activities of objects close to Earth, and has made impact simulations in order to establish a protocol of activities to present the threat of an extraterrestrial impact.

The steps of this protocol include monitoring, early detection of the threat, precise description of the object (size, composition, speed, etc.), determination of date and time of impact and precise location of the place where it will collide with the Land.Having this information would allow governments and international entities to take appropriate measures both to avoid the impact, if possible, and to establish contingency plans (evacuation, medical and humanitarian care, etc.).

Asteroid size

Of course, if the asteroid is 10 kilometers or more, the only measure to take would be to put things in order with the world and the gods, and close the eyes, as in the extraordinary movie Melancholy , from Danish Lars von Trier…

Or not? Since the 90s of last century, in organisms such as NASA, alternatives to destroy or divert any large-sized object that threatens to impact the Earth are evaluated.Options include the use of nuclear missiles (destruction of the asteroid, as in the Armagedon and Deep Impact ) movies; of a powerful laser beam (shots from the Earth and from spacecraft to make it release gases and cause its diversion); gravitational traction (a ship that harnessing the force of gravity changes the course of the object); and until the landing and installation of solar candles to change its course.

But none of these plans will work if the threat is not detected well in advance.Since 1998, following orders from the US Congress, NASA has allocated resources to detect and follow asteroids and comets of the solar system that may constitute a threat; for this it has the global network of astronomical terrestrial observatories and some of the time of some of the space telescopes. This activity requires personnel and financial and technological resources that governments are not always willing to give.It is a too abstract threat, although present, and of a type of space science that generates little profit from the political point of view

It is estimated that there are more than 10 million asteroids and comets of various sizes in the outer solar system with which at some point we could cross.

What would humanity do if an asteroid were to impact Earth?

It should be a priority to look at those who can harm us.65 million years ago dinosaurs could not do anything to change their destiny, we could.

And you? Do you think that at some point we will see an asteroid hit Earth, will it be our end? Follow our page with the article Theories about the end of the world.

What happens inside a black hole? The distressing possibilities

SPOILER ALERT! In a recent movie- Interstellar , 2014– an astronaut played by Matthew McConaughey and a rectangular robot fall into a black hole and survive to tell it.This movie featured a fancy scientific advice, such as the physical Kip Thorne , involved in the discovery of gravitational waves caused by the interaction of two black holes, but that did not prevent them from being too benign and fanciful when describing what could happen to you within a black hole. What happens inside a Black Hole? The distressing possibilities Black holes are points in the universe where the force of gravity is so intense that not even light can escape them. They can be the result of the collapse of red stars or the way in which Some galaxies are structured. This phenomenon was one of the predictions of the theory of relativity in the early twentieth century, with key contributions in the sixties and seventies, by physicists such as Stephen Hawking, and with a discovery in the new millenni...

What will humanity be like in 1000 years?

We are taller, we live longer and we are healthier than ever.Besides, thanks to advances in technology, we can search almost any imaginable piece of information on Google (along with kitty videos). What will humanity be like in 1000 years? That is what has happened to the human species in the last 1000 years or so, but what will happen to us in the next millennium? Some scientists offer fascinating and provocative answers , about the color of our skin and the shape of our body, even how long we can live. As we go further in the future , the increase in temperature, accompanied by the deterioration in the protective ozone layer, will make the skin darken as part of an evolutionary improvement, since it will protect us against UV rays.temperatures can also affect our size. We will have longer and thinner bodies to better dissipate excess body heat. These remarkable changes would take more than 1000 years to appear, But the idea that the human being of the future will chan...

Meet the man who can "see" without eyes

Would you believe that a person can "see" without eyes? Do you think you could move and locate yourself without the sense of sight? Then, in Science Daily Online we present a really amazing case.Don't miss it! Daniel Kish , who lost both of his eyes when he was sick with cancer when he was little, has become a famous character for being able to use his echolocation capacity and be able to locate himself perfectly thanks to the echo and his traveling companion, his brain that really makes him see. Daniel Kish and his echolocation Truly, our brain is responsible for transforming the signals it receives from sight , so we can consider it an interpretation of each one.the data to create those internal images. Kish’s echolocation capability works when he bumps his tongue against the roof of his mouth and uses the echo he hears to produce a representation of the sound that surrounds his world. Best of all, nobody teaches him to do this, he has always h I miss sin...

They analyzed the feces of ancient Greeks and discovered what Hippocrates already described

Surely you have heard about Hippocrates, the considered father of medicine, who lived in ancient Greece between 460 and 370 BC and to which important contributions to this science are attributed.Recently, also, the discovery of graves Tombstones with 25 skeletons inside allowed to analyze the faeces of ancient Greeks and ratify what Hippocrates already described at the time. Discovery and analysis of feces of ancient Greeks The Greek island of Kea deparo not long ago surprised archaeologists: they discovered a series of sepulchral graves containing at least 25 skeletons of the Neolithic era (4th millennium BC), from the Age of Bronze (2nd millennium BC) and Roman times (between 146 BC and 330 AD).And among the skeletons were feces of ancient Greeks that can provide some new insights into life, parasites and the medical knowledge of Ancient Greece. Tombs such as those found on the Greek island of Kea Scientists at the University of Cambridge analyzed these feces of ancient G...

The organic matter of the soil is made up of animal and plant-type waste in different degrees of decomposition and has Carbon (58%), Hydrogen (5%), Oxygen (5%) and Nitrogen (5 %) among other things.Organic matter in combination with clays, controls most physical reactions ico chemicals produced in the soil.In agricult...

Are we all connected?

Today, in Science Daily Online we bring you a phenomenon that seems recent, but has actually been studied for over 100 years.Do you want to know what it is? Theory of the Six Degrees of Separation confirms that any individual on our planet is connected to another with a set/chain of acquaintances with no more than 5 points of union or links.Based on this theory, only 6 steps separate us from another person on Earth.Six levels or degrees. The initial idea arose in 1929 by the writer Frigyes Karinth , in a story called Chains . Only 6 levels separate us from a stranger Later, in 1967, Stanley Milgran , a well-known sociologist, investigated this phenomenon with an experiment to prove the theory. To do this, American inhabitants of the Central part participated-West of America , c on the objective of delivering a package to a stranger in the city of Massachusetts, located thousands of kilometers away. The idea was to provide data such as the name, general location and lo...

And you, also "procrastins"?

And you? Procrastines too? If you don't, we are sure that you know someone who does it continuously and that, surely, makes you despair. But what does this disturbing word really mean? Let's give an example: you have been dating a person for a long time, you make plans for the future, you have many illusions and projects, however, your partner never seems to decide. He is unable to formalize your relationship because something like that, not only overwhelms him, but even He is lazy. "Are we not well like that?" I often reproach you. Let's give another example: you may have the classic friend who never seems to finish his studies. It is easy to be an "eternal" university student who faces the responsibilities and anxieties of the working world. And what about people who spend all their time in front of a computer screen letting out "real life" ? Sometimes, it is much easier to let ourselves go, evading responsibilities, than to put means t...
