When your cat tries to pull a ball under the sofa or ludically tortures a mouse or a lizard, have you noticed which leg he uses most frequently? Well, even if you don't believe it, cats, dogs and even horses share with us the fact of using one limb more than the other, that is, behaving like left-handed and rights, and such an issue, although it may seem absurd, has been the object of study..
Do you know if your cat is right or left handed? Check it out!
The first study on this curious topic was conducted by a group of researchers from the University of Ataturk (Turkey) in 1991.They were evaluated through exercises a good number of domestic cats, and the study resulted in 50% right-handed felines, 10% ambidextrous and 40% sinister, that is, left-handed.In 2006 the University of Manchester made a similar study with dogs giving a result similar, although the proportion was 50-50, with an almost nonexistent ambidextrous percentage.
These results contrast sharply with those of other research conducted in 2009 by Queen's University (Belfast, Northern Ireland) Psychologists Deborah Wells and Sara Millsopp subjected 42 cats to a series of exercises to determine the tendency dominant company.
A first result was that in simple activities cats use their legs interchangeably, and in that they do not differ from us, and it is only in more complex activities when it is possible to determine whether they are right or left handed.
After several tests they came to new conclusions about these pets, as is the fact that most females are right , while a very high percentage of males tend to be left-handed , and only one was ambidextrous.
Do you want to know if your cat is right-handed or left-handed? You could do some of the tests that these researchers used. For example: place a piece of tuna in a jar with a mouth wide enough so that it can put a leg but not the muzzle.Generally the leg used will be the dominant one.Another test is with a toy that you should take out of a narrow place, such as the space between the sofa and the floor. To have some certainty you would have to repeat these tests several times.
Of course, once you know if your cat is left or right, we would love you to share with us that new data about your pet.And stay with us reading the Great benefits of having cats in the house.
