Did you wake up this morning with the last reggaeton song you don't even like, stuck in your head and you don't know why? Today we unveil you because the songs are stuck to us.
The catchy songs are inserted in our auditory cortex , located in the temporal lobe, which is the part of our brain that is in charge of process and store auditory information.
The earworm
According to James J.Kellaris, associate professor of marketing at the University of Cincinnati, there are a number of melodies that, due to their characteristics, generate a kind of brain itching that can only be resolved by the involuntary repetition of the song.
"The process begins involuntarily. When the brain detects a different incongruity or detail in the musical stimulus," Kellaris argues.
This« earworm »( musical doodle in Latin America or musical worm in Spain) is more frequent in simple songs , with intense rhythms, or in melodies with extravagances as unexpected notes.
In this sense, the more times we listen to a song, the more chances we will have that it sticks to us.
Other theories
However, there are other theories as to why our songs stick together.A group of researchers from Darmouth College from New Hampshire, they conducted an experiment with some students, who put a song they already knew and turned it off without warning.
Then, through a scanner, they discovered that his brain tried to complete the song , repeating it over and over again.Although, when the song was not known, the brain had no stored information to complete it and did not cause its repetition.
Sec In this study, the songs would stick to our minds because our brain is interested in remembering how they continue.
How can we get rid of a song from the head?
The best option is to listen to the song again but complete , so that the auditory cortex can process the fragments of the song that it does not remember, so it will stop repeating it in our mind.
If this doesn't work, try doing some activity that needs concentration like a sudoku or exercise, so that your brain's focus shifts.
OR well, use another song that you like to replace the one that has been hit, singing only the part you know, until your mind can't stop repeating it.
